Cataract FAQ’s

Q: How long does the surgery take?

A: The procedure itself takes about 15 minutes, but when you include the preoperative and postoperative time, it will take most patients three to four hours to complete the whole process.

Q: Is cataract surgery painful?

A: Cataract surgery is painless. Mr Gangwani will always administer a topical anaesthesia (eye drops) to numb the eye. Some patients may experience a scratchy sensation or mild soreness after the surgery (usual healing process), but that usually improves within the first 24-48 hours. We can advise on what medications can be taken to alleviate any discomfort if necessary.

Q: How long do I need to wait until I can resume normal activities?

A: Immediately after surgery, we will always advise you to go home and rest for the remainder of the day. However, you will not be able to drive home, so it’s highly recommended to arrange someone to bring you to the clinic and take you back. You will be able to resume normal activities within a week of the operation. We usually advice not to get water in your eye for 2-3 weeks after surgery, to reduce the risk of infection.

Q: Will I need to wear glasses after Cataract surgery?

A: It very much depends on the type of intraocular lens you choose for your surgery. If you opted for standard cataract surgery, you would most likely have a Monofocal lens. A mono-focal lens will improve distance vision, but you will need reading glasses to be able to see clearly for near vision. If you choose a premium lens implant (Trifocal Lens), it will correct vision for a range of distances. You will have a better chance of being less dependent on glasses.

Q: Can my cataracts return?

A: No, because the old blurry lens, the cataract, was removed entirely. Sometimes a secondary cataract can occur, where the capsule that is left behind can become cloudy over time. However, it’s easily treated using a laser. The procedure is painless and will only take a few minutes.
